SkyTruth: Chevron Oil Spill off Brazil - 10 Times Bigger Than Official Estimate?

Based on Brazilian government data showing the locations of active drill rigs, provided to us by some of our very helpful followers on Twitter, we conclude that Chevron's well was being drilled by the SEDCO 706 semisubmersible drill rig operated by - wait for it - Transocean.  Yes, the same company that operated the doomed Deepwater Horizon rig for BP.

The MODIS/Aqua satellite image from NASA, above, was taken three days ago.  It shows an apparent oil slick originating from the drilling location and extending over 2,379 square kilometers (the south end of the slick gets entrained in an interesting clockwise eddy in the ocean currents).  At 1 micron thickness, that's a volume of 628,000 gallons (14,954 barrels) of oil.

And it all started as "a tiny drop in the big ocean".

It is more profitable to have a disaster. BP showed the way now everyone is getting into the act.

Great!

Here we go again!

Hey. We gotta have a better term than spill.

Spill is from a vessel (container)

WTF, huh?

I wonder if they will get a similar "naught, naughty" from that government like BP got from BO. They can get most of the oil needed from land location, how many "spills" do they want?

It is the spill disaster that is profitable with quick returns. It drives up the oil prices and if they had anticipated the correct timing of the spill, their futures trade and shorting of their own company shares would make them rich beyond their means in a much shorter investment period. Plus you go to jail for insider trading. Here as 5 of BP directors showed, they got back their lives and none of them go to jail for insider trading.

I say Planned Disaster is the next big thing. Forget Sub-prime, Housing bubble, ponzi schemes... all these ended up in jail. With PD you rake in billions and still run the company. And when the company stock is lower enough, you buy them back. What can be more fail-proof than that?

Certainly not the fail-safe BOP!

Why did Obama lend billions of dollars to Brazil to develop their off shore oil and virtually shutdown the off shore drilling in the US? http: //online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203863204574346610120524166.html

Wouldn't this make Obama complicit in the oil spill?

Castor B,

Thanks for the link. Yes I would think he is. There should be some responsibility for financing anything. You should check how your money is being spent. Chevron don't exactly have good environmental records as well.

Obama did not lend Petrobrás any money; Ex-Im Bank did. http://www.factcheck.org/2009/09/bogus-brazilian-oil-claims/. Looks like an arms length transaction.

The responsibility for the spill remains with Chevron and Transocean. The Brazilian Feds are showing impressive teeth; lets wait and see for how serious a bite. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-11-21/chevron-s-brazil-operator-status-may-be-downgraded-after-deepwater-spill.html#

Is it possible? Planned disasters? That's SCARY.
