There has been a rash of gut-wrenching animal cruelty stories in Houston lately, and we're sad to add yet one more, this time dealing with a dumping ground of mutilated dogs in Crosby.
Rhonda Heffernan, who's been involved in the rescue community for several years, launched a website to spread awareness and (hopefully) help bring the culprit(s) to justice. She told Hair Balls that she's sought help from both the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which she said brushed her off entirely, and the Humane Society of Houston, who allegedly explained that they could not offer a reward without an official investigation. (She said the same was true for Crime Stoppers.)
Fortunately, Heffernan says she's gotten tremendous support from the family who owns the land along U.S. Highway 90 near the County Road exit where the animals have been found. Along the Frontage Road exit right nearby, Heffernan and others have found 27 living dogs, many of whom were shot both with bullets and BB pellets.
