A quote from Fintanne Dunne on 18 Aug 2010 clearly showed the prevailing experts' views at that time. The Macondo crude oil was thought to be freely flowing out of the well to fuel the rig fire. And who planted such ideas?  BP of course, with their prepared scripts of the orchestrated disaster which planned for the well to blow at the well bottom to unleash the crude from the reservoir. Unfortunately for BP the scripted plan did not meet reality and their "paid" actors had already gone to town with their acts. Too late to change the scripts. That is why we see so many inconsistencies in BP's official story.
